Circus Workshop | Risk Assessment

Possible hazards relating to circus skills at events and parties. Who may be at risk and the action required to minimise the perceived risk.

Summary of potential hazards
Hazard Who could be at risk Action required Notes
Falling, tripping Public and staff Tidy up constantly

Ask public to put things back when they have finished with them

Be vigilant when supervising

Do not bring out too much equipment at the same time
Good control and good house keeping are important

Organisers to provide an enclosed area at public events
Injuries caused by falling off equipment Participants Do not use unicycles, strap on stilts, wobble boards and tight wires at public events

If these activities are to be used at private events they must be very closely supervised
The only way to learn to ride a unicycle is to keep falling off until you eventually find your balance
Cuts and burns Staff and public Do not include fire juggling or knife juggling in workshops, they are too dangerous
Being knocked over Smaller children Avoid overcrowding

Children must be supervised by an adult

Do not have small children and older children / teenagers / adults taking part at the same time. It is very easy to knock over a small child when moving quickly to catch a diabolo or when moving around to catch juggling balls
Stagger sessions according to age groups if possible
