What is a clown ?

Ask anyone to describe a clown and they will usually say red nose, big feet, wig, funny clothes and sometimes a flower that squirts water. Ask any group of children where you would see a clown and they will almost certainly say the circus. If you go further and ask what do clowns do they will inform you that they tell jokes, throw custard pies, do tricks,  juggle and make people laugh. People also seem to associate clowns with balloons and this may be because we  see pictures of clowns in advertising posters, illustrations  and in children’s books holding bunches of balloons. Clowns are also categorized by adults as people who entertain children at a birthday party and make balloon animals. Clearly there is a conception in our minds of what a clown is.

When we see a picture of a clown our subconscious conjures up images of circus music, fun and laughter. If you are having some kind of event or promotion and you include a picture of a colourful clown it suggests to people that they are going to have lots of fun.

To be a clown requires certain qualities. Essentially a good clown must like people, must have patience, a desire to please, be creative, imaginative and have a sense of humour.

It is very easy to dress up as a clown, however, to be a professional clown requires training, dedication and experience. Professional clowns are usually highly skilled. Some clowns specialise in mime, some are expert jugglers or balloon modellers, some only work in theatre and on stage. Other clowns are multi skilled and do a bit of everything including magic, storytelling, physical comedy, slapstick, puppets, circus skills, singing and dancing. There are even a few exceptionally talented clowns who only perform for adults.

Children are fascinated by clowns and tend to get very excited when they find out a clown is coming. To them a clown is like a cartoon character and they know that the clown will be silly and make them laugh.

Clowns have been around since the earliest times. In mediaeval times kings and noblemen had court jesters to entertain them. Many of Shakespeare's plays had clown characters and Joseph Grimalldi who first performed on stage in 1781 was the father of modern clowning. Philip Astley opened the first circus in 1770 and this became the home of modern clowning. Some clowns have become famous and made there fortunes. Notable clowns include Coco, Grock and Charlie Cairoli ( Blackpool Tower Circus ).

A professional clown is a highly skilled, trained and experienced individual performing as a fool. Modern day clowns need to be versatile and adaptable in order to entertain audiences in many different situations. A clown today may be required to perform at a birthday party, an outdoor event, a family fun day, a store promotion, a shopping centre, on stage or as a walk about, meet and greet act. A lucky few can still perform in the circus !

Clowns have  long history and many traditions. As long as people enjoy being entertained there will always be a place for a good clown.
