Booking a Children’s Entertainer for a Birthday Party
Tips and advice to help you and your party entertainer
First you will need to decide where to hold your party. If you are going to book a magic show, clown show or puppet show, these are all best done indoors. Avoid using your garden if at all possible as there are too many distractions and the weather may be inclement. The best option is a village hall or room at a community centre, leisure centre etc. You could have the party in your living room but check with the entertainer to see how much space is required. You may need to move some of your furniture and ornaments. See that your chosen entertainer is free on the date and times you have in mind before booking a venue. Children’s entertainers are very busy at weekends especially in the summer and at Christmas.
The normal duration of a birthday party is two hours. You will need at least thirty
minutes for setting up at the beginning and the same for clearing away afterwards.
The usual format is to have a show ( 45 -
Keep a parking space for your entertainer as close to the entrance as possible. Offer assistance in unloading props and equipment as this gesture will be greatly appreciated and saves time setting up.
If you are laying the room out before the children’s entertainer arrives leave space for the show to be set up away from doorways, toilets and the kitchen. It is best to have a blank wall behind the show with the children facing towards it. This minimises any possible distractions. Put all of the lights on as a gloomy room creates a gloomy atmosphere.
Save balloons, party poppers, kazoos and other items until after the show. If you do want to put balloons out then fasten them to walls or hang them from the ceiling and keep them out of reach until later.
It is a good idea to give each child a sticker with their name on. It’s very helpful to be able to address the children by name and shy children will feel more comfortable too.
If parents are staying at the party ask them to be quiet during the show or provide them with tea and coffee etc in an adjoining room until the show has finished. A group of parents holding a conversation at the back of the room can spoil a good show.
Be prepared to deal with naughty children. Not all children are well behaved. A show can be ruined by one or two disruptive children. Keep an eye on things and if you see a child constantly interrupting or misbehaving take action, don’t leave the entertainer with the problem.
Toddlers can easily be knocked over or trodden on if left to wander around the performance area. Ask parents with very young children to sit them on their knee or to keep them under supervision.
Don’t forget to bring matches, rubbish bags and a cd player for music ( before / after the show )
