We always had great family parties with lots of delicious home cooking. I hope you enjoy these ” yummy yummy ” cookies as much as we did when Mum made them for us.

How to make ” Soft Chocolate Cookies “

Have a baking tray ready

Cream together butter, syrup and sugar

Beat in egg and vanilla with a little of flour

Gently mix in remaining flour and bicarb until thoroughly combined. Stir in chocolate

Bubble Trouble At Birthday Bash

Children’s Entertainer, Ron Wood of Jolly Good Productions, had bubble trouble at a birthday bash today. The party took place at Scorton Village Hall near Richmond, North Yorkshire. The Magic And Bubble Show had gone really well with lots of fun and games until the grand finale where Ron puts every child inside a giant bubble. At first the bubbles wouldn’t form and disaster loomed. Ron thought that the extremely low temperatures had affected the secret mixture he uses to make the bubbles. Fortunately the mix stabalized and all of the very excited children were able to have a turn which meant the party ended on a high note after all.

Is a Bouncy Castle a dream or a nightmare ?

Like them or loathe them Bouncy Castles are here to stay but are they a dream or a nightmare ? If you are a parent thinking about hiring a bouncy castle for a birthday party or an event organizer booking one in for a family fun day, show or gala, what do you need to know ?

Bouncy Castle

Bouncy Castle, Dream or Nightmare ?

Accidents do happen

It’s a fact. There have been lots of accidents on bouncy castles and some of them very serious and there have even been a few fatalities. You need to be aware of this. Remember the inflatable maze that blew away in Chester Le Street ?

Public Liability Insurance

When a serious accident happens there is going to be a claim! The blame will fall on whoever was responsible for supervision. At a birthday party it is likely to be the parent in charge or the person who made the booking. At an event it could be the event organiser. Make sure you know where you stand. If the hire company are not providing a supervisor they are not responsible unless the accident is attributable to faulty equipment or they have not left instructions on how to use the inflatable safely. Finally, even if they are on site the organiser could still be partially to blame if they have not checked that the hire company are doing their job properly. Ignorance is no defence in the eyes of the law. If you are a parent hiring a bouncy castle for a birthday party you should contact your own insurance company and seek advise.

Bouncy Castles are fun!

Make sure your kids play in safety!

Here are some tips

  • Make sure the bouncy castle has a valid test certificate.
  • Check that electrical appliances are PAT tested.
  • Do a visual check on cables, fans etc to ensure there are no bare wires, loose plugs etc.
  • Do a visual check on the inflatable. Look out for tears in the fabric, stitching coming appart, damaged or missing anchor points.
  • Keep electrics away from water and don’t use outside in the rain or during wet weather.
  • Make sure the unit is well anchored down using stout metal ground spikes. If on hard standing substantial weights are required.
  • The surface of the bouncer must be dry. Wet slippery surfaces are unsafe.
  • Don’t put big kids on with little ones.
  • Don’t overcrowd the bouncer. Ask the hire company how many kids can go on at a time.
  • Footwear should be removed whilst bouncing.
  • Soft mats should be placed at the open side to allow safe entrance and exit.
  • No food or drink should be allowed on the unit ( choking hazzard )
  • Sharp objects or toys should not be carried whilst on the unit.
  • Climbing on the walls must be forbidden.
  • The bouncy castle must be properly supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Make sure they know the do’s and don’ts.

What to do if there is an accident

Make sure you know exactly what happened. Write it down and take photographs. Take the details of any witnesses and if possible get statements from them in writing. Inform the hire company. Inform your insurance company ( in case there is a claim at some time in the future, if you don’t tell them they may not cover you ).

Do you have any other advice relating to bouncy castle safety ?

How to get the most from your children’s entertainer!

Hiring a children’s entertainer for a birthday party is going to involve laying out some hard earned cash. Having a Clown, Magician, Punch and Judy or Puppet Show is going to be great fun, however, you want to make the most of your investment. You have checked out the act’s credentials, followed up on a few references and your expectations are high. You want your child and his / her friends to have a great time. Here are a few pointers to make sure you get the most from your children’s entertainer.

Things to do in advance

  • Find out how much space the entertainer requires.
  • Check with the entertainer if you are thinking of doing the party outside.
  • Discuss the room set up with the entertainer.
  • Will chairs be required?
  • Arrange a parking space for the entertainer’s vehicle, close to the entrance.
  • Find out if the entertainer will require  assistance  bringing equipment in and out.
  • Let the entertainer know if the function room is upstairs or if access is difficult.
  • Ask if a power point will be required and make sure you know where sockets are located.
  • Let the entertainer know about anything else you have planned for the party either before, after or during the performance.
  • Will parents be staying and if so what arrangements have been made for them?
  • Find out how long the entertainer needs to set up and make sure the hall is going to be open on time.

On the Day

  • Avoid scattering balloons all over the floor. Save the balloons until after the entertainer has finished. The children will enjoy having a charge round at the end and they can take their balloon home with them.
  • Keep children away from the entertainer’s props and equipment before the show.
  • Keep an eye on any naughty / hyperactive children. They have the potential to disrupt / ruin the show for everyone else. Be prepared to take action to sort out any bad behaviour. Don’t leave it to the entertainer.
  • Politely ask parents to be as quiet as possible during the show. Having a continuous din in the background is a distraction for the children and spoils their enjoyment. People probably don’t realise how noisy they are being. Imagine trying to watch your favourite TV programme with a group of adults chattering away behind you.
  • Resist the temptation to give out treats, drinks, ice cream etc during the show. It can completely break the flow. Save them until afterwards.
  • Keep kazoos, party poppers etc until after the show ( more fun for later )
  • Ask if any children need to use the toilet before the show starts.
  • Put a sticky label on each child with their first / christian name clearly written on in BLOCK capitals.  This is a great help to both you and the entertainer. It’s much nicer to be able to address the children by name.
  • Discuss with the entertainer what will happen at the end of the show. Make sure you both know what happens next.

If you are able to cover most of the above points it could make the difference between having a good birthday party to having a brilliant birthday party. Remember the old adage :

” prior preparation and planning prevents poor performance “

Hope your next party is a FANTASTIC one !

Have you ever had a birthday party that went terribly wrong ? If so what would you do better next time ?
