Punch And Judy Kissing Is No Laughing Matter

Mr Punch is no romantic that’s for sure. He’s pretty direct when it comes to his dealings with his wife Judy. When he wants a peck on the cheek he says “kissy kissy kissy”. Listen to the laughter from the children during my Punch and Judy Show as Mr Punch tries to be affectionate.
There are so many funny scenes like this in Punch and Judy. No wonder the show is as popular today with children and adults. It’s just so much fun. I hope you enjoy this short film clip.

Why You should Never Forget Your Trousers

Chuckle The Clown

I like to think I’m quite an organised person. Perhaps given the very varied nature of my business and taking into account all of the different things I do then personal organisation is important. As one half of Jolly Good Productions I am always taking out different equipment, props and costumes according to whichever of our various shows or workshops we happen to be doing on any particular day. This involves a lot of unloading and reloading. I’m sure I’m not alone when it comes to leading a busy life.  Most of the time I get it right but every now and again I manage to drop myself in it as they say.

One of my most embarrassing moments occurred whilst providing children’s entertainment at an event organised for the families and friends of  staff at a regional hospital. It was quite a big do with lots of people and what seemed like hundreds of children. I’d arrived in plenty of time, brought in all of my stuff and set up in the function room.  They had asked me for my Chuckle The Clown Show followed after the break by Punch and Judy.

As my Punch and Judy booth is very large I often use it as a changing room. I can hang up my costume and relax inside out of the way before the show.  I had taken my clown costume to the cleaners as I like to make a good impression. I do like a nice clean costume. So my costume was hanging up in its plastic bag, straight from the cleaners, ready to be put on at the last minute. I did my make up and waited for the room to fill up. About five minutes before I was due to make my big entrance I took my costume out of its plastic bag and was utterly horrified to find – NO TROUSERS!!! I must have assumed the trousers were on the coat hanger when they were taken to cleaners and I didn’t check when I went to collect. What a silly billy!

I had two choices. Either explain to the organisers that I couldn’t do my clown act and say  it would have to be just Punch and Judy or I’d have to go on without trousers. Now fortunately I do wear special comedy clown knickers ( only when performing of course ). They are like a silly pair of shorts which come down to my knees ( and I am wearing normal undies under them ) so all was not lost.

I did the only decent thing and carried on regardless. I did my entire clown show with no trousers. The audience certainly seemed to be having a good time. The show rolled along as usual with lots of audience participation, fun and laughter. Perhaps they thought that this was my usual appearance or that I’d done it to for laughs. I’ll never know and They’ll never know that in addition to my red nose I had a very red face beneath the slap.

The moral to this story is : Busy people should use a check list! ( which is what Hazel has been trying to drum into me for years! )

Wensleydale Show 2010

The weather was fairly kind at the Wensleydale Show this year. A bit breezy but sunny and warm. There was one terrific down pour of rain at about 2.30pm but it soon cleared up and the sun came out again.  I always enjoy this event as there is so much to see, especially if you are interested in country life. There are displays in the main arena throughout the day and the commentator is very knowledgeable about farming and the countryside which makes everything so much more interesting. There are loads of traders selling all kinds of goods, a fantastic craft marquee, the Leyburn Brass Band, fairground rides and bouncy castles for the kids, farm animals, vintage cars and machinery, beagles, hounds, horses, falconry and lots of food and refreshments. Definitely a great day out for the whole family.

The show takes place on a field just outside of Leyburn on the way in from Bellerby at the side of the A6108. I always like the view as approaching Leyburn from the Richmond side.

I was at the show performing Punch and Judy as I have for quite a few years.

Last year was very difficult as I was sited on a very exposed piece of high ground and the winds were extremely strong. I was quite literally hanging on to the puppet theatre during the last show to stop it blowing away even though I was well and truly anchored down. The organisers used to have a marquee for the children’s entertainment but decided on grounds of cost to dispense with this which is a shame because it is always better to be under cover.

I had three brilliant audiences this year. Lots of children and families all gathering round and joining in with gusto to the antics of old red nose. Some nice compliments too. Not so many people turned up for the last show as the rain had dispersed the crowds by then. Still, those who did come seemed to be enjoying themselves.

There is a huge amount of work required to organise and run an event of this kind. I hope the Wensleydale Show continues to be supported by the general public as it is such a fantastic day out.

Put it in your diary for Bank Holiday Weekend, August 2011. It’s going to be another good one!

West Witton Gala | Wensleydale

The sun shone over Wensleydale on Sunday 22nd August. It was a bit breezy but very warm. A perfect day for the annual West Witton Gala. The gala field is on high ground adjacent to the main road and has perfect views down the dale to Leyburn and beyond. It’s a wonderful community event with a BBQ, cakes and refreshments plus a variety of entertainment throughout the afternoon. There were children’s races, a dog show, falconry displays, side stalls, bouncy castles and of course Jolly Good Productions Punch and Judy and Face Painting.

In addition to the regulars from West witton there were quite a few visitors enjoying the atmosphere and joining in with the fun.

It’s definitely making a note in your diary for next year!

The Seaside Comes To Barnsley!

A park in Barnsley was transformed into the seaside for an event organised by Tuckers Funfairs. In addition to a fantastic range of fairground rides and attractions there was also a massive sand pit to represent the beach complete with plastic seats and deck chairs for parents and grand parents to sit in whilst the kids played.  There was a main stage with pop bands playing throughout the day, a balloon seller, face painting, side stalls of all kinds and even a Fortune Teller. Food and drink including fish and chips were on sale too.

Of course no seaside event would be complete without ice cream, donkey rides and Punch and Judy.

Jolly Good Productions were employed to provide the Punch and Judy Shows on one of the days and the donkey man even brought a little land train which also fitted well into the theme as rides like this are often operated on the sands at seaside resorts.

It was a great idea to try and do something different. Everyone loves a trip to the seaside so why not have the seaside event brought to your doorstep. If you fancy having an event like this for your local community and you’ve got some suitable land why not call Dunny Tucker on mob 07976271516.

Monkwearmouth Museum Gets Thumbs Up From Mr Punch

Mr Punch and his entourage visited Monkwearmouth Museum in Sunderland yesterday and performed four shows to appreciative audiences of children and adults.

Mr Punch enjoyed his visit as it reminded him of the days when people used to flock to the English seaside for day trips and vacations. The museum is housed in a former railway station. The building itself is very grand as was the style in the victorian era when it was conceived. There are many exhibits to show what life was like in the area in years gone by. There is even a fully restored ticket office to show what the station would have been like in Edwardian times.

The museum is designed to be child friendly and there are various interactive displays and a playroom too.

In addition to the Punch and Judy Show there was also face painting by Katrina Wood. This was very popular and there was a queue all afternoon. There were lots of oohs and aahs at the stunning faces Katrina painted and quite a few parents enquiring about Katrina’s availability for face painting at  parties in the Sunderland / Newcastle area. This is no problem as Katrina is based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Mr Punch’s verdict : The museum is interesting, educational and fun with friendly and helpful staff. Definitely worth a visit.

Jolly Good Fun At RAF Waddington

The annual Air Show at RAF Waddington is massively popular with the general public. Needless to say a huge ammount of planning and hard work is required by many people to ensure that everything is in place and runs smoothly on the day. The RAF always do a fantastic job thanks to the commitment and dedication from every member of the team. In the run up to the big day everyone is affected, not just the airmen and women but the service families too.

Once the dust has settled and things are back to normal the RAF have their own party for family and friends to relax and enjoy themselves. This usually takes place a week after the Air Show.

Jolly Good Productions were delighted to be invited to provide children’s entertainment once again this year. Fortunately Natasha had just returned from working in France and so all five of us were available.

We had a great day, there is always a friendly atmosphere and the RAF always make you feel welcome.

We did a varied programme of entertainment for the kids including Punch and Judy, Face Painting, Stilt Walking, Magic Show, Circus Workshop and Bubble Making.

There was also a company providing bouncy castles, sumo wrestling and a mechanical bull machine.

It was a lovely hot day and we all enjoyed an ice cream from the ice cream van before packing up at the end.

Athersley South Action Group Show How It’s Done!

It takes hard work and dedication to organise and run a community action group that can really make a difference. The Athersley South Action Group are a great example for anyone thinking of giving it a go. Here’s what they have to say about themselves:

The Athersley South Action Group came together during the summer of 2008 when the churchside Community Park was opened unofficially. We are a group of residents who were brought together by the dissapointment of vandalism and overall neglect of the park.At various meeting's with the church steering group we decided that something had to be done. Athersley South is a fantastic place to live, but what is there here for our kids, so we decided that we would form a community group to help maintain the park and provide activites for the kids. The groups aims are even higher we are still organising Litter picks on the park on a weekly basis and carrying out saftey checks on the equipment. We have organised trips for young people and we are looking into craft clubs, youth clubs and other social events for both children and adults.Athersley South Action Group want to pull the community together to make Athersley South a more fun, safe and enjoyable place to live for all ages.

The annual Gala takes place on Sunday 8th August 2010 and Jolly Good Productions will be there. We will be providing Punch and Judy, Face Painting, Children’s Magic Show and Circus Workshop.

Come and join in the fun.

Peter Armitage ( Bill Webster in Coronation Street ) and Gala Queen Katie Brown opened the 43rd Hawes and District Gala on Saturday 26th June 2010. The event took place on Tommys Field by kind permission of Anthony Heseltine. The event began in the High Street where large crowds had gathered to watch the parade. There were many floats and local people in fancy dress, there were vintage cars and tractors plus music from the Hawes Prize Silver Band.

Peter Armitage and Katie Brown welcomed the public with short speeches over the pa system. It was a lovely sunny day and there was a proper carnival atmosphere.

After the parade there was entertainment on the show field including a fancy dress parade, children’s races, Punch and Judy, falconry, a bouncy castle, slippery pole, rodeo bull, ice cream and refreshments plus side stalls too.

The organisers were very pleased with day and are now planning next years gala.
